Food: Sweet Chick LA

Sweet Chick LA is a dope gourmet chicken & waffles spot located in the Fairfax area of Los Angeles. Nas is the genius behind it and I think knowing that made going that much more dope. He has 4 locations, 3 in NY one in LA (thank you Nas!). I was there to meet up with a girlfriend over brunch and talk all things life. I’m working on making my rounds to places I haven’t tried yet and after my fiance and our friend Ariele went, I knew I had to give it a shot.

The moment I arrived, my experience was great. They were attentive but not pushy, I was seated immediately and since I needed to wait a bit for my friend they checked up on me enough without being irritated with me or rushing me; so that was appreciated. The vibe was open but sectioned off in a cohesive way. They have booth seating, high tables and bar seating. It really works for whatever kind of a mood you’re in. I’m not sure what the NY locations look like but this gave me down south with a hint of LA. Drinks are served in mason jars, it’s got a lot of natural light that made me feel like I was somewhere else for a moment. The flowers on the table are minimal, almost as if they were just picked in the front yard; very much southern vibes. The nod to LA came by way of a hot pink neon sign at the bar that said “Today was a good day”. So LA.

There is a brunch and dinner menu; I can’t wait to go back for dinner. The brunch menu was solid with a good variety of options depending on your mood. Being that it is a chicken and waffles spot of course that was on the menu. They had a little bit of everything, and this is where the southern vibes show out a bit: shrimp & grits, waffle sandwiches and mac & cheese. I was waiting a little bit so I got to see everyone else’s food before ordering mine and that really didn’t make it much easier for me.

I ordered a boozy watermelon lemonade; the watermelon lemonade was their house special for the day. SO good! I initially ordered a boozy sweet tea, but it wasn’t how I envision my sweet tea especially having lived in North Carolina for a few years. For brunch I ordered (and did not take a picture of) the waffle chicken sandwich which was very good. I really wanted french fries so a sandwich it was. It comes with a black eyed pea spread that I quickly substituted for their jalapeno jam (which comes on a totally different sandwich) and it was the best decision I made. It was so good!

Overall I enjoyed myself, I loved the vibe, the food was great, the service was great. The portions were a nice size, I was definitely full when I left. You are able to make reservations which is nice and recommended because it is smaller. I’m so looking forward to going back for dinner. I loved it, I really don’t have a complaint and totally recommend trying Sweet Chick LA.
